How the West was Won! #2

May 4 @ 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM

West End housesSaturday, May 4, 2024
(Rain date: Saturday, May 11)

Beginning in the median at Park and New York Avenues

Come to learn how the exciting West End section of Long Beach came to be and how it evolved from sand dunes and summer bungalows to a vibrant full-time neighborhood of homes and businesses. We start where the West End began, at the New York Avenue marker honoring Davenport “Deb” Wright, the first resident of Long Beach. Along the way, we will “show and tell” stories of important events, personalities and places, including when the Roaring Twenties and hurricanes came to town.

We will end at Shine’s Bar at the corner of California and Beech Street. Shine’s, opened in 1912, is the oldest bar in Long Beach and a former speakeasy. In about ninety minutes, you will travel one-and-a-half miles, going from New York to California.
